Abstract. This article focuses on the study of the role of informal contacts in the international negotiation in 1960-1970. The author analyzes the topic using the memoirs of Soviet diplomats
A. A. Gromyko’s, V. M. Falin’s, A. F. Dobrynin’s, V. I. Erofeev’s and his wife G. N. Erofeeva’s. In modern international negotiations, informal contacts begin to play an increasingly important role in order to reach an agreement. Therefore, the author of the paper investigates the specific situations of the ambassadors and diplomats of the Soviet Union (for example, the guidance of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the USSR A.A. Gromyko to the diplomatic corps or the establishment of a confidential channel of communication between the Soviet Ambassador to the United States A.F. Dobrynin and President of the United States John F. Kennedy), described in their writings. The author explains the meaning of using protocol techniques for the diplomatic relations, organization of confidential communication channels and preliminary assessing the attitude of partners to various options for resolving the debate.
