 Abstract. The relevance of the research topic is due to the growing interest in “small” (regional) history, studies of local lore, as well as biography in recent decades. This article presents the basic facts of the life and work of Professor A. I. Chivilev, a pupil of the Olonets provincial male gymnasium, based on archival sources and scientific literature, which, in particular, allow one to come to a number of conclusions regarding the history of public education and enlightenment in Russia and Karelia.
