Abstract. The article examines how the development of pulp and paper industry in the Soviet Republic of Karelia was reflected in the press publications and memoirs of an economist and party functionary Lenian Kitsa. These materials enable to trace both the changes in the pulp and paper sector and the evolution of Kitsa’s attitude to the described object. The author identifies the following characteristics of the studied texts: Kitsa’s use of hypothetical facts, his critical view on the work of Segezha pulp and paper mill, and the emphasis placed on the role the Communist party apparatus played in managing the region’s economy. Lenian Kitsa’s texts evoke a sense of future crisis that was building on the eve of the 1980s and resulted from the industrial gigantomania and voluntaristic policies of the early 1960s.
