Abstract. This article examines students' motivation to participate in extracurricular activities within the framework of the self-determination theory developed by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan. Based on an empirical study involving students at Petrozavodsk State University, certain differences in the structure of life aspirations between participating and non-participating groups of students were identified.
