Abstract. The article, for the first time, observes the role of the story about St. Varlaam Keretsky in D. G. Novikov’s novel “A Flame Out At Sea” (2016). In the course of the analysis, the significance of the plot about Varlaam in the structure of the novel was determined, a range of relevant pretexts was established, the semantics of the image of the saint were described, taking into account the peculiarities of the writer's idiostyle, his concept of «the new northern prose», and the leitmotifs of creativity. The analysis makes it possible to establish not only the existential and spiritual/Christian meanings of the legend about St. Varlaam, but also the “archaic/traditionalistic” ones, correlating with D. Novikov’s traditionalism in general.
Keywords: Varlaam Keretsky, traditionalism, northern text, modern literature
