Abstract. The article aims to analyze the description of Japan during the Tokugawa period in the works of European travelers who visited the country in the 17th, 18th and first half of the 19th centuries. This analysis has been done by examining "Description of Japan" by Francois Caron and "History of Japan" by Engelbert Kaempfer; also by researching "Travels in Europe, Africa and Asia" by Karl Peter Thunberg, and "Illustrations of Japan" by Isaac Titsingh; and by investigating "Recollections of Japan" by Hendrik Doeff and "Nippon" by Philip Franz von Siebold. The author shows that these works allow not only to get acquainted with the image of Japan in the minds of Europeans, but also to discover some features of the cultural contacts between Europe and Japan during this period.
