Abstract. This article considers the motive of the doubles as a way of illustration the expressionism in the novels “The Dwarf” by Per Lagerkvist and “The Golem” by Gustav Meyrink. It allows authors to reveal the insincerity and variability of the world. However, the motive of the doubles operates in each of the novels in different ways: in “The Golem”, the doubleganger (Golem) is one of the parts of a torn consciousness, and in “The Dwarf”, the doubleganger (Dwarf) personifies everything ugly and evil that everyone hides in the depths of their souls. In addition, this device is either a complex combination with occult teachings (G. Meyrink) or an allusion to the era of World War II (P. Lagerkvist).
Keywords: Meyrink, “The Golem”, Lagerkvist, “The Dwarf”, expressionism, doubleganger.
