Abstract. The article examines the phenomenon of mentorship between two historians of the third quarter of the twentieth century. The aim of the study is to reconstruct the transition of their relationship from mentorship to friendship, drawing on the personal archives of N. F. Slavin held at the National Archives of the Republic of Karelia, including letters from a Moscow historian, E. A. Lutsky. The findings suggest that the relationship between Slavin and Lutsky gradually evolved from hierarchical mentorship into an almost equal friendship, which was shaped by both personal factors and their similar scholarly interests and professional milestones.
