Abstract. The transition to independent student life requires complete separation from parents, which significantly affects psychological well-being. This pilot study reveals that separation from one's mother and father contributes to different aspects of well-being: independence from the mother is linked to autonomy and environmental mastery, whereas independence from the father is linked to self-acceptance and overall psychological well-being. These findings offer scope for further investigation into gender aspects of separation within Russian samples.
Keywords: psychological separation, student psychological well-being, emotional independence, functional independence
