Abstract. Studies of learning French as a foreign language, both in foreign and Russian contexts, consistently demonstrate difficulties in selecting appropriate verb tense forms. A combined qualitative and quantitative analysis of 2,772 errors from the PACT corpus identified that 84.3% of these mistakes involved incorrect tense agreement. The main problem appears to stem from an incomplete understanding of the tense-aspect system, which requires the acquisition of complex grammatical skills.
