The Fate of the Notarial Profession in the Olonets Province, 1917–1918

Abstract. Based on archival documents, this article examines for the first time the process of eliminating the pre-revolutionary notarial system and establishing Soviet notarial departments in the Olonets Province in 1917 and 1918. It has been established that the delay in the process of abolishing the notarial system compared to the central provinces was due to the later recognition of Soviet power in the Olonets Province, the inconsistency of the central authorities, and the actions of the Council of Commissars of the Union of Communes of the Northern Region. This delayed the establishment of new notarial departments, which was unexpectedly interrupted by a decree of the People's Commissar of Justice of the RSFSR of December 19, 1918.
