Abstract. This article examines the character of Mark Volokhov in Ivan Goncharov’s novel The Precipice through the lense of Sergei Bocharov’s concept of the potential plot in Alexander Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin, viewed as a precursor to mid-19th‑century Russian literature. The study focuses on the genesis and poetics of the character who combines the traits of Pushkin’s protagonist and his European literary predecessors. In response to contemporary social transformations, Goncharov adapts Pushkin’s potential plot to his own views on the challenges of his era and the relevant social and political context.
