Abstract. The aim of this study is to examine the factors that led to the establishment of the Republic of Taurida, which existed from March to April 1918. This topic holds particular relevance due to the growing interest in the history of Crimea during the Civil War, both among the public and the academic community. The author identifies several key reasons behind the formation of the Republic of Tavrida. Utilizing documentary sources, the analysis concludes that the Republic was a project initiated by the Left Socialist Revolutionaries (Left SRs) and was established to allow the Tauride province to pursue an independent foreign and domestic policy, separate from Soviet Russia.
Keywords: Crimea, Taurida Soviet Socialist Republic, RSFSR, Taurida Central Executive Committee, Central Executive Committee of Soviets of Ukraine, Russian Communist Party (of Bolsheviks), Left Socialist Revolutionaries Party, V.B. Spiro, J.A. Miller
