Abstract. This article explores the role of the pre-revolutionary institution of notaries in the life of the Boroshnev merchant family, who owned substantial real estate in the Lodeynopolsky Uyezd of the Olonets Province by the mid-nineteenth century. The findings indicate that while notaries in St. Petersburg served primarily as junior notaries, сoncluding transactions related to the mortgage or sale of the family’s properties, the notaries in Olonets took on the role of either trustees for family members or senior notaries who validated these contracts. Consequently, by the beginning of 1917, the Boroshnevs had liquidated their properties, converting them into financial capital.
