Abstract. The author touches upon the issue of poverty and inexpressiveness of the speech of a modern person. The materials received in the course of observations of the speech of students of the Faculty of Philology are presented. The results of a survey aimed at identifying knowledge and using Orenburg words from the Dictionary of V. I. Dal, which was conducted with students of a pedagogical university, are reflected. The information presented in the article will be useful to employees of educational organizations, teachers, students, may be of interest to specialists involved in linguistic research.
