Abstract. The article considers the ethnolinguistic characteristics of the spider lexeme in the Russian language picture of the world of the past and present. The analysis of the etymology of the word and its synonyms in Russian dialects allows us to identify such dominant motifs in the spider nomination as the features of the appearance (the shape of the legs, abdomen) and the weaving of nets. Also, the article notes the differences between the traditional and modern perception of the spider image. The associative dictionary of Y.N. Karaulov and a survey in a small group gives an idea of how the image of the spider has transformed over time in the minds of native speakers of the Russian language.
Keywords: ethnolinguistics, traditional culture, modern culture, etymology, linguistic worldimage, spider.
